Physicians and Providers

Research shows that physicians are the leading voice parents turn to for advice about their child's wellness and obesity-related issues. Children's is counting on physicians to continue to be the key influencer of children and their parents so they can lead happy, healthy lives. As part of Strong4Life, Children's physicians developed a program designed to help providers initiate conversations about BMI measurement, nutrition and physical activity behaviors with patients and families.

Why are providers across the state participating in Strong4Life?

Research indicates that providers are the leading voice parents turn to for advice about their child's wellness and obesity-related issues. Unfortunately, providers typically only have nine minutes for a well child visit and most providers report the inability to start this conversation or the lack of tools to do this effectively. Leveraging Children's expertise, Strong4Life offers a variety of training options for healthcare professionals.

Strong4Life trains healthcare providers in motivational interviewing, goal setting, BMI tracking and childhood obesity management protocols. Our programs arm healthcare providers with the skills and tools necessary to educate patients and families about the Strong4Life principles, set goals to improve healthy behaviors and effectively manage patients who are overweight or obese. Training around goal setting and motivational interviewing are in person, interactive training sessions, while the treatment protocol education is conducted via webinar. Training programs are tailored for the different target audiences including primary care providers, Ob/Gyns, registered dietitians, school nurses or WIC/public health staff.

Key objectives:

  • Increase goal setting with patients
  • Increase self efficacy in use of counseling techniques by the provider
  • Increase knowledge around reimbursement (if applicable)
  • Increase knowledge about treatment protocols
  • Increase self efficacy about ability to treat
