Family hiking in the woods

In the winter—especially during the week with limited daylight—it may take a little creativity to get the family moving. But there are so many good reasons to be active, whether you’re inside or outside.

Regular movement:

  • Boosts your immune system by increasing your body’s germ-fighting cells.
  • Improves your mood.
  • Reduces feelings of anxiety and depression, and increases self-esteem and self-confidence.

And, while you can benefit from moving your body indoors, there are some specific benefits of going outside in the winter. Sun exposure is a great source of Vitamin D, which helps our immune systems and keeps our bodies strong. Plus, germs love close contact, so the more time we spend indoors, the greater chance we run of catching others’ illnesses.

While you’re taking part in our fun activities this winter, keep these safety tips in mind:

  • Wear a helmet. Kids should wear a properly fitted helmet any time they’re playing on something with wheels. Role model best behavior by wearing a helmet of your own when using a bike, scooter, rollerblades, etc.
  • Be street smart. Teach your children how to be safe pedestrians by looking left-right-left for moving cars and wearing bright clothes, especially at night.
  • Practice playground safety. Going to the park? Check that play equipment and guardrails are in good working condition. For more tips, review our guide to playground safety.
  • Brush up on home safety. Whether you’re building a blanket fort or playing balloon volleyball, make sure furniture in your home is anchored securely. Check out other home safety tips, like storing medicine and household chemicals properly.
