Employer-provided health insurance
Health insurance through an employer is the most common way people get coverage. However, not all employers provide health insurance, and those that do may only provide it to full-time employees. Health insurance from an employer may also not be the best option for every person, child or family.
Employer-based health insurance
This type of coverage is provided by an employer and has options to cover you and your family. Talk to your employer about what is available to you.
TRICARE
If you or a family member are in the military (or otherwise eligible), your family’s coverage may be through TRICARE. Although this is similar to employer-based health insurance, TRICARE does have some very specific rules.
Government-assisted health insurance
For those who qualify, there are three different ways to receive government-assisted coverage.
Medicaid
Medicaid is a joint state and federal program that provides coverage for people who meet specific criteria. Coverage is different from state to state. See if you are eligible for Medicaid in the state of Georgia.
Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP)
Through PeachCare for Kids®, CHIP helps children get insurance in families with incomes too high to qualify for Medicaid, but too low to afford an individual plan. See if your child is eligible for PeachCare for Kids®.
Medicare
Medicare is a federal program that provides coverage for people 65 and older, or people with disabilities, permanent kidney failure, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) or other conditions. See if you are eligible for Medicare.
Individual health insurance
For people who do not have health insurance through an employer and do not qualify for government assisted coverage, there are individual plans available.
Marketplace
Georgia Access is the state’s government-run platform to help compare health insurance plans and prices. Georgia residents can enroll at georgiaaccess.gov.
Direct
Private plans may be purchased directly from health insurance companies, agents or other online marketplaces.
