Beat the Big 4: Community Involvement

When it comes to keeping kids safe, parents can't do it alone, and neither can we. It takes a community. And that’s where you come in. We need your help to beat the Big 4 preventable killers of kids:

Unsafe sleep. Drowning. Car crashes. Firearms.

They can happen in a second. They can happen to any family. But they're preventable.

Whether you serve families directly or simply care about kids, we want to equip you with resources to help spread these messages to the families in your communities.

What is Beat the Big 4?
Beat the Big 4 is a public health initiative to bring awareness to, and help prevent, the top 4 preventable killers of kids: unsafe sleep, drowning, car crashes and firearms.

Who's behind Beat the Big 4?
The Beat the Big 4 initiative is backed by the doctors, nurses and public health experts at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. We want to bring the community together with a shared goal of keeping kids in Georgia safe from preventable injury.

Why these 4?
Combined, these 4 preventable killers account for more than 550 child deaths in Georgia per year on average. Data from 2020 to 2024 shows:

  • Sleep-related deaths are the leading preventable cause of death in Georgia children under age 1. Georgia has the 5th highest sleep-related death rate in the U.S., with more than 500.
  • Drowning is the second leading cause of death in Georgia children ages 1 to 4. More than 200 kids in Georgia drowned.
  • Motor vehicle crashes—including car crashes and other traffic-related incidents—are the leading killer of Georgia children ages 1 to 14. More than 800 kids in Georgia were killed in motor vehicle crashes.
  • Firearms are the leading killer of Georgia youth ages 1 to 17. More than 1,000 kids and teens died from firearm injuries.

How can you help?

  • Know the Big 4. Unsafe sleep. Drowning. Car crashes. Firearms. That's the first step.
  • Sign up for email updates and receive our communications toolkit. In addition to sending the communications toolkit, signing up for emails means you’ll be the first to know about in-person events, new resources and more.
  • Spread the word. Share on social media, include it in your newsletters, and talk about it with other parents and caregivers. Everything you need is in the communications toolkit.
  • Display materials. Request printed materials so you can show your support and raise awareness by putting up a Beat the Big 4 poster, window cling, yard sign and more. (Must be subscribed to emails to request.)
